A family of universal and RF counters to meet your needs Agilent Technologies 53131A/132A/181A high-performance counters give you fast, precise frequency measurements at an affordable price. These counters feature an intuitive user interface and one-button access to frequently used functions so you can make accurate measurements quickly and easily. Real-time digital signal processing technology is used to analyze data while simultaneously taking new readings, speeding measurement throughput. The technology, developed for Agilent’s high-end line of modulation domain analyzers, allows the counters to gather more data for each measurement, so you get higherresolution measurements in a fraction of the time it takes other counters. The 53131A/132A/181A counters offer built-in statistics and math functions so you can scale measurements and simultaneously measure and track average, min/max and standard deviation. Automated limit testing lets you set upper and lower limits for any measurement. An analog display mode lets you see at a glance whether a measurement is within pass/fail limits. The counters flag out-of-limit conditions and can generate an output signal to trigger external devices when a limit is exceeded. For quick access to frequently used tests, a single keystroke recalls up to 20 different stored front-panel set-ups. For computer-controlled systems applications, each counter includes a standard GPIB interface with full SCPI-compatible programmability and a data transfer rate of up to 200 fully formatted measurements per second. The standard RS-232 talk-only interface provides printer support or data transfer to a computer through a terminal-emulation program.
Agilent 53131A Universal Counter The two-channel 53131A counter offers 10 digits per second of frequency/period resolution and a bandwidth of 225 MHz. Time interval resolution is specified at 500 ps. An optional third channel provides frequency measurements up to 3 GHz, 5 GHz, or 12.4 GHz. Standard measurements include frequency, period, ratio, time interval, pulse width, rise/fall time, phase angle, duty cycle, totalize, and peak voltage.

The Agilent 5370B precison time-interval universal counter offers unsurpassed single-shot resolution and a microprocessor-based design for versatile measurement and complete statistical characterization capabilities. The exceptional single shot resolution is achieved by a unique phase-lockable-phase-startable oscillator, used with a digital vernier interpolation scheme that eliminates the ± count quantization error present in most time-interval counters. Statistical functions include mean, maximum, minimum, and standard deviation within the selected sample size.
The 5370B allows both positive and negative time interval measurements that are useful for differential phase measurement. Other features include automatic calibration of systematic errors and easy display of triggers. Performance, automation, and ease of use make the 5370B the premier time interval measurement counter for applications in component testing, radar/laser ranging, nuclear systems, calibrations labs, computer peripherals testing, digital communications (jitter analysis), and IC tester verification.

Advantest has employed a digital TRAHET technique to achieve 1 Hz resolution with a gate time of just one second. It enables not only frequency measurement but the application of offset to frequency results and calculation of standard deviation, ppm, maximum values, minimum values and other useful parameters. In addition, a digital comparator has been provided and totalizing and measurements of the carrier frequency of pulse-modulated signals are also possible. Measurement ranges extend from 10 mHz to 18 GHz for the R5372. It enables a single counter to be used for broadcast satellite, satellite communications, pilot-signal measurements for radio equipment and many more diverse applications.

The Agilent 5386A Frequency Counter offers prescaled measurements to 3 GHz based on gallium arsenide (GaAs) technology. The GaAs prescaler and attenuator circuitry are integrated on a hybrid substrate. Bipolar technology permits the integration of reciprocal counting and interpolation techniques on a single integrated circuit. The tightly-integrated design achieves overall high performance, excellent reliability, and low cost of ownership.
The 5386A incorporates a 12-character display, accessible remotely via HP-IB. The liquid crystal display (LCD) can be read in direct sunlight, and has large characters that can be seen from the end of a bench or mounted high in a test rack. The 5386A can be easily carried to remote locations for service and calibration applications.
